Bringing stone alive
Combining the figures from the temple with spectacular footage from the Javanese wilderness, sophisticated 3D animations, narrations and a lavish soundtrack, the program brings to life the bas reliefs of Borobudur in more than 3 hours of HD videoclips
Paths to Enlightenment….! Enlightenment can also be interpreted as “Illumination!”.Illumination that translates into a play with the sublime light which Java´s sun casts in an ever changing rhythm over the some 15.000 sculptured characters which populate the 1460 bas-reliefs of this largest Buddhist sanctuary in the world! There is not one instant in time during which these figures look the same as before and this is what brings this seemingly rigid mountain of over one million volcanic stone blocks to its uniquely vibrant life, which animates the divine smile of its stone-carved characters! Sun and moon, the fleeting clouds, and the change of seasons are the animators of this gigantic spectacle in which every character, every facial expression changes from one moment to the next as in a dream-like movie!
And what a superb cast this film features! Like in a huge epic movie carved from stone, we meet under the dramatically changing shadow-play of the Borobudur´s characters a cast worthy of any major Hollywood production: glamorous juvenile heroes – like Prince Siddhartha, the future Buddha, or like Sudhana, a young man in search of Enlightenment! Leading men, like the glorious Bodhisattvas Manjusri, Samantabhadra or Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future! Voluptuous leading ladies such as Queen Mayadewi, the pure village girl Sujata or the tempting ten “Goddesses of the Night!” A supporting cast of kings, demons and noble warriors, hundreds of scintillating starlets in the guise of “Devas” and “Apsaras,“ and – last but not least – an army of some 15.000 extras, all carved in stone!
